🥙 For dinner, we ate delicious Greek food at Mykonos Quayside. The drinks were flowing, the food was simple but very good and the atmosphere was perfect.

Last week, my husband Sharath and I traveled with our dogs, Raju and Aishu, to Aurika Coorg, a luxury pet-friendly resort in Coorg, set among 45 acres of rainforest and coffee plantations in the Western Ghats. And the dogs were fascinated by what they saw and experienced. A large expanse of green, plenty of space to run and lots of things to nibble on, unlimited treats and games, delicious food and comfort food. First a little background on how we became new pet parents. A few years ago, when Covid suddenly took over our lives and the first lockdown began, my husband and I joined a community of pet lovers and helped feed Indy’s dogs on the streets. And that’s how we found a very cute pack of puppies lost in the park without their mother. They were only a few weeks old and we took turns feeding them. One of them was a loud and playful puppy and one of our friends immediately named him Raju as that was his favorite name for all dogs.
Raju became mischievous and quiet day by day and soon became the happy but strong alpha of the pack. Unfortunately, tragedy struck and when he was just six months old, he was brutally beaten by some goons in the middle of the night and his collarbone was broken. Raju, a hyperactive boy, was paralyzed and in severe pain – most vets told him to put him down. Finally, one of them agreed to the surgery and we brought him home, hoping that one day he would be able to walk and run like normal dogs. However, after two years, he can stand and walk a little, he is still paralyzed and incontinent but runs in the wheelchair we got him. Raju too is a bit of a traveler and had been to the beach and the forest and now had a wonderful holiday in the hills. His little brother Ishu is always with him and he started staying with us in the last few months and this was his first trip away from home.

Most pet friendly resorts discriminate against independents and prefer cute and cuddly breeds. They also have many limitations. Raju has special needs as he is a paraplegic dog. Although we have taken him to boutiques in Ooty and Bangalore and other pet-friendly destinations near Bangalore, we were a little worried about whether he would be comfortable here. But Orika Coorg made sure to feel at home right from the start. Pets are our guests is their mantra and they wear their pet friendly attire on their collar as you can see on the table right at the entrance, said General Manager Sanjay Pandita who welcomed us. As we had our welcome drinks, Raju and Aishu had a treat to welcome them. We listed them as pets when booking with specific details.
There were pet beds, treats and toys in the rooms and they loved it. Everything is carefully designed with pet safety and comfort in mind. They had bowls to serve food and water. While meals are tailored for dogs, they can sit with you at certain designated tables in the restaurant.
The staff treated the pets so lovingly that Raju and Aishu felt very comfortable there. They walked and ran with us, rolled in the grass, sunbathed, chased squirrels and ducks, gazed at the vast greenery from the balcony and curled up to sleep dreaming of more adventures.
But Aurika Coorg is much more than just a luxury pet-friendly resort. Spread over 45 acres, the aesthetically designed property offers you a lush view of the Western Ghats rainforests and coffee and spice plantations. Every part of the property tells a story, whether it’s an art installation in the reception area or the artistic driftwood used to design some of the furniture. You can go bird watching, nature walks and plantation tours and even try your hand at coffee making.

Birds are literally everywhere – in gardens, in plantations and as art in rooms and hallways. I went birding with Ganesh, the “birder of Coorg” for over two decades and a wonderful storyteller. Ask him to take a walk around the property along with a nature walk. I did two leisurely birding sessions in and around the property and in an hour we saw about 30 species. It was also so therapeutic.
There are 55 rooms at the property, three of which are specifically reserved for pets and pet parents. It is an ideal holiday destination for families, companies and now wedding venues. Along with fine dining and dining options, you can choose from the multi-cuisine Mirasa restaurant, an elegant bar, Arriva, a coffee and wine lounge called Roast & Red, and even a private bell-shaped bridge, Aura.
You can catch some stars on the terrace, Au.rion, or head to the spa, Araya, for some pampering. An outdoor swimming pool opens up to mountains and forests, and there are meeting rooms and ballrooms for conferences and events.
