Best Dog Friendly Lakes – Known for its vibrant green and blue colors and iconic granite boulders, Lake Tahoe straddles the California-Nevada border, an unexplored destination and one of our favorite places to visit that can’t be missed. I believe it’s still only a few hours away. Sitting 6,225 feet above sea level, Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in North America and the second deepest lake in the United States, just behind Crater Lake.
Lake Tahoe is divided into North and South Lakes. Both areas offer similar activities year-round, but North Lake is known for being a bit more relaxed than South Lake. We spent most of our winter trips at South Lake, but on our summer trips we split time between the two and enjoyed each other.
Best Dog Friendly Lakes
With nearly 300 days of sunshine a year, Tahoe is a year-round destination for all types of travelers. Visiting your dog is especially fun in the summer when there are more activities open to him – such as aerial cable cars and mountain passes at ski areas and fun water activities.

For the full Lake Tahoe summer experience, you should visit after Memorial Day and before Labor Day. We came to Tahoe once Memorial Day weekend and it snowed! If you’re not interested in high 80’s days, come earlier in the summer. Unfortunately, Tahoe continues to see higher and higher temperatures each summer due to global warming, but it is still like the rest of California in that it cools down significantly in the mornings and evenings. So, don’t forget your laws.
I wouldn’t come on a holiday weekend, like the 4th of July. Accommodation is very expensive and water will be packed. I would also look for golf tournaments that can drive up prices and cause congestion – there are only a handful played each year in the Tahoe area.
If you are flying into Tahoe, we recommend flying into Reno and you will want to rent a car. If you’re driving, be sure to hit the road this weekend to beat the crazy traffic going in and out of the lake. People in the Bay Area work on Fridays in the summer, so avoid Friday afternoons for driving and Sunday afternoons for driving. These times of day will easily add an hour or two to your travel time. We also recommend planning for daylight on your drive. This is one of our favorite scenic spots that you don’t want to miss The road is also a little windy if you enter 80 in South Lake and feel less dangerous in the daylight.
There are plenty of options when it comes to dog-friendly accommodations in Lake Tahoe. Whether you choose a hotel or a rental, we recommend that you choose your accommodation according to the location of your activities and the environment of the area you are looking for. We prefer long-term home rentals or hotels with home comforts and a garden or grassy area nearby. We have stayed at The Coachman for short weekend getaways and have rented several houses and apartments through AirBnB and VRBO. We were supposed to stay at this Aphra for our recent trip but they had a bit of a burst pipe emergency so it’s still on our wish list.

I usually like to find accommodations within 30 minutes of most of our activities so we spend more time exploring instead of driving. If you’re going to spend a good amount of time in Tahoe, you should split your time between the North and South Lakes – the whole lake is worth experiencing! – and plan your activities accordingly.
We know it can be difficult to create an itinerary to visit a place that has so much to offer. That’s why we’ve rounded up our favorite activities that dogs enjoyed (and we’ll warn you about the ones we didn’t) during our weeklong stay in Lake Tahoe.
Emerald Bay is located 12 miles north of South Lake Tahoe. Vehicles cannot drive down to the lake, but there are many viewpoints and trails This place is especially good for watching the sunset at Inspiration Point, where there is free parking next to the scene.
You should arrive around 7pm to catch the sunset. Time to catch the sunset behind the trees, perfect for photos, then grab a bench and hang around to watch the colors of the sky as the sun sets around 8 :20 p.m.

Another viewpoint above the lake, the Emerald Bay State Park Lookout, is worth a visit, but before sunset. This scene also has designated parking and space to park on the shoulder of the highway when full. The position of this view causes the sun to lose visibility around 7:00 p.m. From the sun behind the trees, so plan to visit this place first and then drive a few minutes down the road to Inspiration Point if you want to do both.
In the summer, hiking and hitting the lake are two of Tahoe’s top dog-friendly attractions. AllTrails also has a great interactive map that shows all the dog-friendly trails around Lake Tahoe, so it’s easy to find them near where you live or decide. which ones are on your must-have list. We did all of our trips at South Lake and enjoyed every trail we chose.
I usually look for easy to moderate hikes that don’t take more than 3 hours to explore. We like to do most of our walks in the morning so it coincides with Ruby’s usual morning walk and usually allows us to beat the crowds and light good and have a place for pictures. After researching AllTrails and several Tahoe blogs, I came across these hikes the first few days of our trip to South Lake Tahoe.
Fallen Leaf Lake Trail is an out and back trail near South Lake Tahoe. This route is generally considered very challenging, but we would consider it relatively easy. There are some tree obstacles and a few bends along the way, but the path is relatively clear and flat. The trail is mostly dirt with rock formations across, so you have to watch your footing.

This is a popular place to hike, so you might meet other people while you explore. The route is open all year round, although the road is not plowed in winter, and it is beautiful to visit at any time. We met several dogs on our walks and sometimes there were some of them.
To access the trail, you must pay a $10 day use feeat the entrance to Fallen Leaf Lake Campground. The clerk will indicate that you are hanging on to your lane and you will then turn and take the road to the left of the car park entrance. The parking lot is about half a mile down the road and you will see it off the road on your left. About 20 spots are used per day and there is a path right in front of the lot that you can cross onto the main path.
The trail starts with a stunning view of the lake where you can walk down to the beach. There were several dogs that made their way to the water for a good shower. There are also benches along the way if you want to sit and enjoy the view, and on the way back we noticed a few campers heading to the lake mid-morning to find their sites.
As you continue on the left side of the path, you wind and weave along the edge of the lake, providing different views and landscapes of the lake, as well as some shady areas. The trail is generally well defined for the first 1.5 miles. I would recommend using AllTrails on your walk to keep you on track, as we went further we went a bit further and ended up in an uncharted area which was just open forest.
Dog Friendly Places To Stay In Minnesota
Altrails says this hike usually takes about an hour, but we spent two hours here with stops for photos and our little adventure at the end.
Make sure you bring plenty of water with you and your dog and pack your belongings. One thing to note is that there are no litter cans in the area, not even on the trail, so be prepared for anything your dog might leave behind.
Chimney Beach Trail is a 2.4 mile out and back trail near Carson City, Nevada. This route is a bit more central to the lake, but close to South Lake, especially if you stay near the Stateline area. It’s a popular spot for walking, paddling, and hiking, so chances are you’ll run into something else
