Caves come in all shapes, sizes and colors and offer hikes ranging from easy to difficult. And young children hope to lift large lava stones, which are heavy but very light because of the air trapped inside.
That being said, Whitney cautions, this is not a trip for overbearing parents. “It’s an experience – one we can’t share with our children in this age of play equipment,” he said.

Across the country, Jessica McFadden claims Virginia’s Shenandoah National Park as a nonprofit organization.
