In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service, several bloggers ranked the best parks for families.
Whitney Moss, one half of the duo behind the website Rookie Moms, swears in a cave at Lava Beds National Monument in Northern California. Caves come in all shapes, sizes and colors and offer hikes ranging from easy to difficult. And young children hope to lift large lava stones, which are heavy but very light because of the air trapped inside.
That being said, Whitney cautions, this is not a trip for overbearing parents. “It’s an experience – one we can’t share with our children in this age of play equipment,” he said.

Near the beach, an “amazing” family experience awaits at Val Curtis’ Bon Bon Break in Redwood National Park. Her children, amazed by the tall trees, said that walking through the redwoods made them feel like they were in their own fairy tales.
Jeff Bogle of Outdoor Kids, one of the seniors in attendance, agreed with Val’s choice and planned a few more trips to fill out the trip: He said the nature tour around Fern Canyon – “a beautiful museum”, and a trip to the Gold Bluffs Beach, where he said “redwoods really respond to the power, the power of the sea.”
Across the country, Jessica McFadden claims Virginia’s Shenandoah National Park as a nonprofit organization. An American blogger recently rented a house, and she and her kids spent weekends walking the famous Skyline Drive park, stargazing at night, and exploring the Luray Caverns. His advice: Get a guide to get the best experience.
But for founder Shelby Barone of Orange County Mom Blog, nothing compares to America’s first. For him, Yellowstone is as good as it gets when it comes to family vacations. His tip: As the park is so big and if you want to see it all, get out of the car and see the amazing sights on foot.
Of The Best Family Vacation Spots
“Valley” and “family vacation” can also be synonymous. Nothing beats a sunny day swimming and screaming kids playing in the sand on the beach.
Cape Cod, Massachusetts offers “relaxation, long days and big beach towns and lots of ice cream,” says family coach Kathryn Pearlman. He loves the good weather (“not too hot, not too cold”), quiet beaches, natural scenery, and his family full of fries.
Amy Morrison of Hen says that when she thinks of summer, she thinks of Virginia Beach because as a child she remembers splashing in the water, eating ice cream and drinking in the salty air.
The Outer Banks can get all the ink during North Carolina’s beach season, but Andrea of Just Is a Four Letter Word prefers the less touristy Wrightsville Beach. A few surprises: the vast ocean, the unspoiled sky, the seemingly endless nature.

North Idaho’s Coeur d’Alene took Kimberly Tate out of the box. She and her husband took the family to an Ironman triathlon and landed in City Park, with its city beach, large gymnasium and summer sports complex, and several lakes.
Emelia Cellura of Half-Crazy Mom shows the town of Virginia, Nevada, where silver settled in the mid-1800s. On vacation, she said, “it’s like going back to an old western town — the boardwalk and everything.”
Sarah Hirsch, a blogger at Well Traveled Kids, sees the greater San Diego area as a great family vacation destination because it brings a little bit of everything to the table: beautiful beaches, great hotels, and the amazing scenery of Coronado Island, nearby. “People are very nervous about traveling with young children,” says Jen Campbell Boles, founder of Explore More Family Travel. “It’s not only important to teach your kids to walk at a young age, but it’s good to be able to walk during school holidays (to avoid travel).”
Whether you’re taking your first break as a parent or need some travel inspiration, here are our tips and advice on where to go for the perfect stay.
The beach is one of the most popular places for all travelers. If friendliness, not the beach, is your main concern, look for beach resorts with more amenities and family services.
