Like all dog-loving millennials, I try to take my dog wherever I can. I love taking my dog on outdoor adventures because he really got me into hiking (read more about me in my bio). One of the worst parts of living in California was how many roads didn’t allow dogs. However, I was surprised at how many parks and trails in western Pennsylvania allow and even encourage dogs!

Frick Park is one of my favorite places to take my dog. I may be biased because I live so close to this park, but this park has all kinds of options for hikers (and dogs) of all athletic abilities. Avoid mountain bike trails like Irongate during mountain bike season. Nine Mile Run, Riverview, Firelane, and Hot Dog Dam are great choices for dog-friendly trails.
The only area at the Frick that allows dogs off leash is the Exercise Area (OLEA) adjacent to Blue Slide Park. Rangers can fine park users for not leashing their dogs in areas where dogs are required to be leashed. Check out our Frick Park Trail Guide for more hiking information.
North Park is one of my favorite hikes near Pittsburgh, and the best part about it is that you can hike it with your dog. We recommend bringing your dog, as sections of the Rachel Carson Trail (RCT) are well-maintained, well-marked, and easy to navigate.
Note: There is a section of the RCT where dogs are not entered based on athletic ability. My dog did the full RCT with me last year, but he can cross streams and deal with steep inclines and declines. Please be realistic about your dog’s abilities!
A Day Out With Your Dog In Pittsburgh
Settlers Cabin Park, just south of Pittsburgh, is a great place to take your dog for a walk. The trail is a color-coded loop and fairly easy to navigate (especially if you use AllTrails!) Complete the roughly 6-mile park loop or the 2.8-mile Green Loop hike to see the falls for hikers. the park The park also offers off-leash dog areas, but dogs must be on a leash in all other areas. This Fox Chapel trail system is perfect for dog-training hikers near Pittsburgh. Park at Beechwood Farms and cross the road to the trailhead. It takes about 3 kilometers to visit this amazing waterfall!
Please note that dogs are allowed off leash on this trail. If your dog does not respond well to a dog leash, I would leave it out. For a trail map, visit the Fox Chapel website here.
Located in Washington County, Mingo Creek Park features several miles of paved and wooded trails, perfect for those who enjoy a variety of trails. Bonus for dog owners: there are plenty of trash cans throughout the park where you can leave your poo!
Pet Friendly Things To Do, Events, Hotels & Restaurants In Roanoke

Beechwood Farm is suitable for families with human children, but does not accept furry family members. If you’re staying with your dog on the hook, cross the road to the Hardy Valley Trail. As mentioned above, this trail system is dog friendly and dogs are allowed on leashes.
Neither the Salamander Trail nor the O’Hara Township Park Loop allow dogs. If you are hiking in Hardy Valley Park, be careful because the trails connect!
Most other trails in Raccoon Creek State Park allow dogs, but Wildflower Preserve does not. So leave your dog at home during the last two weeks of April when the wildflowers are in full swing!
