A great way to experience downtown Brisbane is to follow the Riverwalk, a walkway suspended over the Brisbane River. On foot, you can enjoy views of the Story Bridge, the city skyline and the downtown suburbs.

Also known as the New Farm Riverwalk, the route starts at the Riverview Circuit in New Farm, then follows the east bank of the river to Howard Street Wharves. From there it is possible to walk along the River Boardwalk to the Brisbane City Botanic Gardens.
Best of all, leashed dogs make great companions. Although you are asked not to block the popular path shared by cyclists, runners and regular walkers. Brisbane River Ferries and City Cats are Brisbane’s most scenic forms of public transport. And after a successful trial, dogs are welcome to join as long as they follow certain rules.
First, dogs are only allowed on weekdays from 06:00 to 08:30 and then from 15:30 to 19:00. The best time to drive is 8:30am to 3:30pm or any time on weekends. Your dog must be on a leash and muzzled or alternatively in an enclosed carrier and sitting on the outside deck.
Best of all, it extends to the Cityhopper service, a free ferry that runs approximately every half hour between North Quay and Sydney Street, making it easy for tourists to get between the city’s attractions.

Just 15 minutes west of Brisbane city center is the beautiful Mt Coot-tha Forest. With over 1,600 hectares of open eucalyptus forest, this reserve is the largest reserve in all of Brisbane and is a great place to enjoy nature.
Although dogs are not allowed in the adjacent Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens, off-leash dogs are welcome in Mt Coot-that Forest, including the popular summit with panoramic views of Brisbane.
One of the most popular hiking trails is the Summit Track, which starts at the JC Slaughter Falls Picnic Area. The moderately graded trail is 1.9 km each way and climbs below the lookout. Another popular track is the shorter Simpson Falls Track, only 650m long, unfortunately the falls were completely dry during our visit.
There is no shortage of tracks, there are more than 50 tracks to choose from. Double check to see if any trails closed due to some repairs due to 2022 storm damage are currently open.

For another great dog-friendly day out with your pooch, head north of Brisbane to Bribie Island. At the far end of Moreton Bay, the island is easily accessible via a motor bridge, meaning there’s no hassle with boats.
A highlight of Bribie Island for dogs is the excellent off-leash dog beach. Between Woorim Beach and Red Beach, it stretches over 4km, perfect for long beach walks. This is arguably the best dog beach in the entire Brisbane area with its beautiful golden sand.
The off-leash area is easily accessible from the Lowry St end of Woorim, where there is also a dog wash station with a hose. Woorim Beach is known as a surfing beach, although the waves were negligible the day I visited.
Alternatively, head to Red Beach where the water is even calmer. A few hundred meters east of the nearby parking lot, the beach is in a strip, then the beginning of the strip. There are clear maps at the entry points and online.

In addition to the off-leash beach, there are open beach areas at Woorim Beach and Bellara, and a fenced dog park at Sylvan Beach Esplanade.
For a bite to eat, check out the Bribie Island RSL Club on Red Beach Road. It is one of the few RSL clubs with a dog-friendly outdoor seating area.
Bribie Island isn’t the only dog-friendly island near Brisbane. Although some islands, such as Moreton Island, which is mostly a national park, are not dog-friendly, there are several other islands that are easily accessible by boat with your dog.
Perhaps the most popular is North Stradbroke Island, where dogs are allowed in your vehicle on both the ferry and the water taxi (cruise ferry). When you’re on Stradbroke Island, dog-friendly camping and other pet-friendly accommodations are available.

Alternatively, for a quick island visit, the relatively hidden gem is tiny Coochimudlo Island. The island is just a 10-minute ferry ride from Amity Trader’s Victoria Point. There were several dogs on the boat during our visit, no muzzles are required for dogs. Vehicle ferries also run less often.
Once on Coochimudlo Island, there is a seasonal off-leash beach just a 5-minute walk from the ferry port. Dogs are not allowed on the beach on either side of the jetty, walk west on the footpath behind the beach. About 100m after the boat launch, there is a section without a strip, which extends approx. 200m along a beautiful sandy beach.
Please note that the rules vary from month to month due to the presence of migratory birds. In winter, from May to August, dogs are allowed on a leash all day. From November to February, dogs are allowed after 5:00 p.m. and before 9:00 a.m., but dogs must be kept on a leash in spring and fall.

Sea Legs Brewing is located near the Holman Street Ferry Terminal and is easily accessible via the City Hopper Ferry. They offer a selection of their own beers and guest beers on tap, as well as an extensive food menu. Note that the brewery does not have an outdoor area, so dogs are restricted inside the entrance. Only a few tables on the edge of the area are allowed to serve food. I recommend getting there early if you’re visiting on the weekend.
We also visited All Inn Brewing in Banyo, a short walk from the popular Nudgee Dog Beach. Dogs are allowed in and out of the brewery, including at many outdoor tables, as they are not fed on site. Instead, there is a rotating roster of food trucks during popular periods. There was a Japanese hot dog food truck and live music during our Sunday afternoon visit.
Other dog-friendly Brisbane breweries include Felon’s Brewing in Howard Street Wharves, Hope and Anchor in Paddington, Green Beacon Brewing in Tenerife, Yard Dogs in Fortitude Valley and Scottish Brewdog DogTap in Murree.
