Our pup Lincoln has been traveling with us since 2019 and is a big part of why we’ve fallen in love with traveling. Simply jumping in the car is the easiest way for us to travel with her (and we take Lincoln with us wherever we go).

(3) Beaches and lakes with easy access to water and places smelling of sand and mud to cool off.
So we looked back at our travel catalog and put together this trip with Lincoln’s wish list. If you’re looking for dog trip ideas because you have a dog that likes to do whatever you want when you travel, this is it.
Lincoln takes us on this trip to New England, where you’ll find warm summer and fall temperatures, plenty of outdoor activities, and one of the friendliest national parks in the United States.

This plan is similar to the Wicked Good: 10-Day Northeast Trip itinerary, but only includes the main destinations and suggestions for taking your pup.
During the summer, take advantage of the longer daylight hours and cooler temperatures at this time of year than in many other states. Or take a fall trip and enjoy spectacular fall foliage at one of the best fall foliage spots in the world.
We spent five months in Ontario and New England during the 2022 travel season. We spent two weeks camping in Vermont in July, a long weekend camping on the Schodick Peninsula in Acadia National Park in early August, three weeks near Lake Placid in New York in mid to late August and New Hampshire in September in Kempton, and three weeks in Ellsworth. , in Maine in early October and in Attleboro, Massachusetts for three weeks in late October. (We also spent three weeks in Ontario at the start of our trip.)
There’s never been a bad time to be in New England these past few months. Sure, it can get hot at night in the summer, but as long as you make sure your rental property has air conditioning, you’ll be fine. (To be fair, we’re saying this as people who live in Texas, so our heat tolerance is probably better than someone who lives up north year-round.) Yeah, we don’t do anything without air conditioning either, so in that sense, our tolerance is probably lower Ha-Ha!)

However, if you are planning a trip to see the beautiful autumn leaves, head for the second week of October. Places known for their fall foliage (like Kancamagus Highway and Stowe, Vermont) can be busy, but the views are worth the effort.
RTL Tip: Want to spend more time walking and on the water during your trip in July or August? Why not take a pleasant walk among the autumn leaves with a mug of warm cider in hand? Visited in October. Want cooler temperatures but fewer spectators in September?
There’s no doubt that Lincoln is a fan of road trips we can take by car. Because it will be very easy for you to join us. If you are near the point of this trip where you can drive, I recommend it. Follow this route to the nearest point and circle back home.
However, if you can’t get here by car and have a dog that doesn’t mind flying, you can fly into Boston International Airport and rent a car once you arrive. If you are flying, we recommend modifying this itinerary slightly to go Boston > Lake Placid > Stowe > Lincoln, New Hampshire > Acadia National Park > Portland > Boston.

We recommend treating this itinerary as a traditional road trip and staying at a different location at each stop on your journey. You can explore campsites near each destination or stay in nearby towns.
For Lincoln, New Hampshire, consider Pemi River Campground, Lost River Valley Campground, or Lincoln Township. (Can’t find anything in Lincoln? Check out Kempton, New Hampshire, just 20 miles south. We spent a wonderful month in one of Kempton’s red sleigh cabins.)
For Lake Placid, consider Rollins Pond Campground, Ausable Chasm Campground, or Lake Placid Village. (Want a really spectacular view? Find lodging in Lake Placid Village.
Fun Things To Do With Your Dog
Mirror Lake. Mirror Lake Inn has dog-friendly rooms and a restaurant with a dog-friendly patio. Can’t find anything in Lake Placid near Wilmington? )
For Stowe, consider Smuggler’s Notch State Park Campground or the town of Stowe. (We also recommend Burlington, which is about 40 minutes away. Downtown Burlington is super dog friendly!)
For Acadia National Park, consider Blackwoods Campground or the town of Bar Harbor. (If you can’t find anything there, try Ellsworth, Maine. When you’re in Ellsworth, check out the Blue Hill Mountain Sunset Hike. It’s spectacular, dog-friendly, and 1/100 the crowds. (Comparable to the Acadia view!)
Lincoln (not to be confused with our dog of the same name) is located in the middle of the White Mountains in New Hampshire. That’s why it’s the perfect place to start your dog-friendly journey.
Dog Friendly Spots In Tokyo For A Pawfect Day Trip
With so many hiking and dog-friendly activities nearby, you can easily spend a week exploring this area of New Hampshire on your own. (We spent a month here and didn’t get to do or see everything on our list.)
However, you only have one day in the White Mountains for this trip, so here are some recommended activities.
This is a bonus because you can actually drive the Kancamagus Highway on your way from Portland to Lincoln. (So be sure to come back to this part when you drive down the road.) If you don’t make this plan, consider spending about two hours traveling back and forth on the Kancamagus Highway during your stay in Lincoln.

Top 10 Pet Friendly Things To Do In Palm Springs
Kancamagus Highway is a 54 mile drive between Lincoln, New Hampshire and Conway, New Hampshire. It is one of the most popular places in New Hampshire and one of the best places to see fall foliage in the United States. There are many viewpoints and trails on this scenic drive that will keep you busy throughout your trip, but we recommend that you only stop at a few viewpoints and not go all the way. (We have something better planned next time!) Note: Planning to visit in the fall? This ride can fill up quickly, so either ride the night before or wake up early to avoid long lines and heavy traffic on your way to your next destination. The Kancamagus Highway is great, but ideally shouldn’t be your only activity of the day.
Throw you and your puppy out of the car and into the woods! Hiking was our busiest activity during our month in New Hampshire. We went exploring every weekend and Sunday night. Spending time outside hiking is one of the best things to do in New Hampshire.
You can see all of our favorite hikes in New Hampshire here, but if you want to pick the best, we recommend going to Welch-Dickie Mountain. This 7.4 mile loop is a great half day hike with amazing mountain views. It’s dog-friendly, provides good training and is great fun for those who enjoy varied terrain between exposed rock and tree-lined trails.
When searching for this hike on All Trails, search for Welch-Dicky Loop Trail (not “Welch Mountain Rock Frame” or “Welch and Dickie Mountains”). Follow the entire loop to make sure you see the rock field

And Welch and Dickey Mountain. The steepest sections are uphill, so we recommend pedaling counter-clockwise. (Especially useful when it’s wet or when you’re visiting fall foliage when the leaves are falling to the ground. The terrain can be slippery, so take your time.)
Is it dog friendly? Absolutely. This travel itinerary is fully approved by Lincoln (the dog). Be aware that this trail has several steep sections over exposed rock.
