Dog Friendly Holidays Brighton – Brighton is the ideal destination if you’re looking for an easy dog-friendly trip to the beach. It is very dog friendly and only takes an hour by train from London or 1 hour 40 minutes to 3 hours by car depending on traffic. Today we’re going to talk about some interesting things to do to make the most of your dog’s day in Brighton.
Brighton is a very dog-friendly city and from spring to autumn is a great place to enjoy the seaside on a sunny day and frolic with the dogs in the water. We’ve visited a few times, most recently at the Saltdean Lido Dog Swim event in September, and found that there are plenty of dog-friendly things to do to pass the day.

Good season or bad, hanging out at the beach with your dog is always fun. Brighton has a huge shingle beach and the advantage of the shingle is that your dog won’t end up in the house (or your car) covered in sand after rolling around.
New Brighton Holiday Rentals & Homes
Dogs are allowed on any beach in Brighton and Hove from 1 October to 1 April, but there are some restrictions on dogs from April to September. You can find a map showing dog-friendly beaches here and a description of dog-friendly areas here (Brighton & Hove City Council official website). You will usually find signs on the beach indicating where dogs are allowed and where they are not.
The Volk Electric Railway is the oldest working electric railway built by Magnus Volk in 1883, runs from near Brighton Palace Pier along Brighton seafront to Black Rock near the marina with a central station and is dog friendly. We went with Argo, Gus and Glitch in September and it was fun. There is also a visitor center with a small exhibition at the aquarium station near Brighton Palace Pier, where you can also try on railway hats and costumes. Perfect model for a Gus hat.
Trains normally run from March to October and this year the restart date is set for 10th April 2019. Tickets cost £3.90 one way or £4.90 return (adult fares or £2.30-3.00 children ). Trains are very frequent. Tip: As it gets very busy, it’s best to arrive early to get a good seat.
Designed by architect John Nash for King George IV, the beautiful Indian-style Royal Lodge is an exotic setting that will make you forget where you are. Although you cannot visit the Royal Pavilion with your dog (except service dogs), you can walk through the Royal Pavilion Gardens and stop for a picnic. We visited the Royal Pavilion Garden in September with Gustavito and Glitch and it was beautiful. Remember to keep dogs on a leash while in the park, according to the rules.
Hilton Brighton Metropole
If your dog is off leash, there is an enclosed dog park where you can take it for a run. The dog walking area at Withdean Park is fenced off and clearly, the Withdean Park Dog Walking community look after this area very well. There are many walks and hikes you can do from Brighton. Brighton and Hove Council has some guidance to help with your dog’s adventure.
One of these, which you can do with your dog, is the Undercliff Walk from Brighton Marina to Saltdean, where you can ride the Volks Electric Railway. You will be under magnificent white cliffs, away from the traffic, and the dogs will have a great opportunity to swim or play on the beach.
Brighton is not a quiet city, in fact if you want to see the best of it, walk down the historic area known as The Lanes, right by the Royal Pavilion. The North Line is also full of restaurants.

After discovering the Saltdean Lido Dog Swim in 2017, we visited and enjoyed Argo and our friends Gustavito and Glitch last year (see Gus’ YouTube mum video here ). This event is very popular and tickets sell out very quickly, so you should book your place soon. Following the success of the previous edition, this year Saltdean Lido has organized two weekends on the 14th-15th. September and 21.-22. September instead of one weekend. Tickets will go on sale soon, so stay tuned!
In 2019, the Paddle Round the Pier Beach Festival will attempt to break the world record for most people and their dogs on paddle boards. The Paddle Dogs event takes place on Sunday July 7 and is open to all (all about the event here).

Scruff Dog Show. The fun annual Brighton Scraff’s Dog Show, the next edition will be held on 11th August 2019 as part of Country Day in St Ann’s Well Garden, part of the Brunswick Festival (see some photos of previous editions of the dog show here) In 2018, categories include: Most Beautiful the dog, Best Elder, Most Beautiful Bitch, Junior Party Trick, Handsome Tail, Dog Most Like His Owner, Best in Show.
Brighton Pride Dog Show. You can also take part in the annual Pride Dog Show, hosted by Pride in Brighton, which includes prizes for various categories, stalls, a dog fashion show, bars and drinks. Held at Preston Park in Brighton in October last year.
If you’re looking for something social, there’s a meeting group called Canine Conundrum UK, based in Worthing, but also running dog tournaments in Brighton, including dog games on Saltdean Beach.
Brighton is also the site of annual breed-specific events: for example, the Brighton edition of Schnauzerfest takes place on 12 October 2019 in Stanmer Park, to which all Schnauzers are invited.

The dog show is an initiative that has been running for the past three years at Brighton Open Houses and Brighton Festival, created by artist Joanna Osborne. You can visit her home and see a display of dog art, from sculptures to stuffed dogs, beautiful dog portraits by Sally Muir and more. The show, held over several weekends in May 2018, also featured three events: On the Spot Dog Drawing by Sally Muir, the Real Dog Show and The Dog Photobooth by Alma Heiser. There will be no dog show in 2019, but it will be held again in 2020.
In July 2018, Brighton also saw several real dog shows organized by dog media and events agency Pet-Fi, including the dog-friendly magic show The Great Houdini.
If you’re into dog sports and can’t live without them during your stay, there are a few clubs that are perfect for you. Flyball Club, Brighton Flyball and Fun Dog Agility courses offered by the Dog Club.

From London you can travel to Brighton by train from Victoria (Southern Railway), St Pancras International, London Bridge or Blackfriars (Thameslink). Direct services take one hour from London Bridge or 1 hour 17 minutes from Blackfriars. We were told that the trains are packed on weekends. Luckily we didn’t meet the crowds when we left!
You can take your dog on the bus while in Brighton free of charge. Dogs must be well behaved and sit on the floor or on your lap (not on a chair) and you can take two dogs with you (if you have more than two you must ask the driver.
