Dog Friendly Resorts Michigan – Located at the tip of Michigan, Port Austin is one of the lesser-known gems in the entire country, and it’s also pretty dog-friendly! With more than 3 miles of sandy beaches located in Port Crescent State Park, you can relax in the clear blue waters or hike the 18 miles of wooded trails that wind through the dunes for incredible water views.
Dogs are allowed on the stretch of shoreline accessible near the mouth of the Pinebog River, which can be accessed via a steel bridge that connects to the hiking trail closest to the campground. Pets must be kept on a lead and it’s important to remember to clean up after your pet too!

One of my dog’s favorite yards, Mr. Backyard, also in Port Austin! They have a great selection of Michigan craft beers, great bar food, and an amazing atmosphere. They often have live music, so you can enjoy dinner and drinks right in the water with your pack after a long day at the beach!
Lake Michigan Pet Friendly Rentals
Just a few hours up the shores of Lake Huron is another one of our favorite stops, Tawas Point! This dog beach is the only one in Michigan that is actually fenced in, where dogs can run off-leash in a designated area. The camp is also dog-friendly, so you can bring your dog along for a weekend of summer fun!
Boathouse Beer Co. & Boozery is another great stop where you can eat on the patio with your pets. Located in downtown Tawas, they have great food and drinks, and across the street from another little park that’s also dog friendly!
If you’re looking for a unique dog-friendly experience in Michigan, Mackinac Island IT. Take one of our dog friendly ferries – Star Line or Shepler’s – for a car-free island tour – a unique experience! Once there, you can explore more than 70 miles of trails and viewpoints, eat at one of the many local dog-friendly restaurants, and even explore historic Fort Holmes with your dog. Many shops in the city center also allow four-legged visitors – look out for the ‘Dogs Welcome’ sign!
Mackinac Island also has three dog-friendly hotels available, including Park Place Suites, Sunset Condos, and my favorite, Mission Point Resort, which also has an amazing dog yard!

Home to the famous Picture Rocks National Park, located in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Manistee is another northern Michigan gem, and yes, you can bring your dog! There are many places that allow dogs in the park, including Sand Point Beach, Munising Falls Trail, Miners Falls Trail, Miners Beach, Lake Superior Overlook and Beach, and Sable Falls Trail and Beach.
Although the North Country Scenic Byway and all campgrounds/backcountry camping are unfortunately closed to pets, the area’s three drive-in campgrounds, including Little Beaver Lake, Twelvemile Beach, and Hurricane River Campground, allow dogs to stay.
Marquette, also located in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, is one of my favorite places on earth and definitely a place you should put on your bucket list to explore with your dog. Located on the shores of Lake Superior with rolling hills and beautiful views, there are many hidden gems.
Munising Pet Friendly Hotels
When we visit, we stay right at the Staybridge Inn and Suites, which is located in the heart of the city. Large rooms with pet friendly facilities and dogs love to be pampered for a change from the usual camping adventure. Staybridge Inn and Suites is also a great hotel chain to check out in other cities – we’ve stayed at many of them along the way and it’s always fun!
Jump to one of the many waterfalls in the area, and if you’re brave enough, you can even jump into Dead River Falls, a moderate but short 1.7 mile round trip. If you’re looking for water views from the top, check out Mynydd Pen-y-fâl or Mynydd Hogback, both a moderate climb but worth it once you reach the top!
After a day of hiking, check out Ore Dock Brewing’s patio for dogs. They have a variety of house brews and last year when we visited they also had amazing seltzers! If you’re lucky, you’ll see Dia De Los Tacos parked outside – these tacos are so good, we follow this food truck everywhere!
Traverse City has been named one of the best small towns in the United States and it certainly lives up to the hype. It’s also very dog friendly, and we make it a point to visit at least once a year! The Greater Traverse City area is one of Michigan’s premier wine regions, with more than 40 wine varieties located throughout the peninsula. Come for a wine tasting day and take your dog to some of our favorites like Mari Vineyards, Left Foot Charley and Bonobo that accommodate canine visitors!

If you’re looking for a bite to eat, check out The Filling Station Downtown for some of the best pizza we’ve ever had, or The Little Fleet, a food truck that accepts dogs inside. They also have amazing craft cocktails in the main building!
If you want to hike or check out some of the famous blue water beaches, the Good Harbor Bay Boardwalk and Beach is pet-friendly and does not disappoint! It is a 2.7 mile trail with light traffic to a quiet sandy beach. Hired dogs are welcome in recycling and on the beach, as long as they are cleaned up afterwards.
If you want to explore beyond Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes National Park, check out Beulah and the surrounding area! Dogs are not allowed on some trails during the summer due to the endangered Lakeshore Plover, but between December 1 and March 31 other trails in the park become accessible.
Pets are allowed on lease at some of the year-round quiet beaches, including Elberta Beach, which is usually less busy because it’s maintained by Mother Nature herself, and Peterson Road Beach, known for its epic view from Empire Bluff, Sleeping Bear Point. . , and even South Manitou Island on a clear day.
Best Pet Friendly Hotels And Resorts In New England To Book This Summer For Family Fun
Leased animals are also allowed at many of the campgrounds near the park, but be sure to confirm before you go that you are visiting the NPS Sleeping Bear!
Another favorite in the area is the Ironfish Distillery. The property is beautiful and there are several things to do and try, including our own maple syrup, Spirit flights, and my favorite, wood-fired pizza!
Make sure to ask the locals about their favorite spots when you go! From Michigan, to the US, to the West Coast and in between, there’s plenty to explore—and yes, you should bring your dog!

Rachel Jezowski and the Wild Goldens Rachel is a freelance graphic designer and content creator living in beautiful Northern Michigan with her three golden retrievers, Barley, Cassie and Moe! They spend as much of their free time as possible packing and hitting the trails to spend the weekend enjoying all that Michigan has to offer. When they’re not hiking or visiting the beach (and Rachel is unusable, ha!), the dogs love to play and swim in the yard. Rachel is also a big rescue advocate after adopting Cassie, who was rescued from the Chinese meat trade in 2019. You can follow all her adventures and beyond on Instagram at @wildgoldens.
