If you’re looking for something more connected to nature, 13 Acre Retreat may be the perfect place for you. I first discovered this hidden gem last winter when I was looking for a getaway for my husband’s wedding and 2 year anniversary. Nestled on 13 acres of wilderness, these stunning cabins are located in San Antonio, Located about an hour and a half outside of Dripping Springs.

Air conditioner/heater in each room; a small coffee maker; A comfortable bed with fresh linens and beautiful views of the Texas mountains. There are two combined toilets on site; But don’t worry. They are beautifully decorated and kept clean. Other amenities include a reusable water bottle cooler; Includes sink and hot shower with dish and hand soap. It’s an outdoor bath and it’s really cute, but it can get a little chilly if you visit in the colder months.

There is no shortage of things to do during your stay at 13 Acres Retreat. You can walk around the grounds (note: it’s an adventure since there are no roads!) or hop in the car and head to nearby state parks like Pedernales Falls. If hiking isn’t your thing (or your dog), you can also visit dog-friendly wineries/breweries within 20-30 minutes of your vacation. My favorite is Hawk’s Shadow Winery.

If you’ve never been to Lost Maples in the fall, you’re missing out. Located 2 hours from San Antonio, Lost Maples State Natural Area is known as one of the few places in Texas to see beautiful fall foliage. This time must be determined precisely, as it usually changes in mid-October or early November only when the leaf temperature drops. Every Dog Has Its Day

As the leaves change color, Lost Maples becomes a hotbed of activity. It is recommended that you book your campsite in advance; Sometimes up to a year in advance. Availability is more limited due to COVID and tickets (camping and day tickets) must be reserved online or by calling customer service.

I promise you, It was worth it. Not only is Lost Maples a beautiful piece of nature year-round, but it has more than 10 miles of trails to explore, including a loop that takes you to the top of a 650-foot cliff. There are 30 camps with running water and electricity, and about 50 base camps accessible, most within walking distance of composting toilets.

Unless you or your child is actually doing camping. You can definitely make a day trip to Lost Maples. Close enough to drive Walk in the morning and walk home in the afternoon.
