One weekend in April, Haggis, Angus and I explored the east side of Loch Lomond. Although many will travel to the busy west side of the lake, we decided to stay on the east side where there are inhabitants, nature and wildlife.
Dog Friendly Days Out In Scotland
We were blessed with great tourist weather: cloudy skies with a blue glow and calm waters on the lake. Angus loves to travel and we love taking him on our adventures, so Loch Lomond was the perfect base for us for a relaxing holiday.
Although Loch Lomond is dog friendly, it is important to be organized when traveling with your dog. Read on for the perfect guide to visiting Loch Lomond with your dog!
The best way to explore Loch Lomond is to combine driving and walking. We found that driving around the east side of Loch Lomond gave us more freedom; However, the road to Rowardennan is very rough, which definitely made us want to drive less.
Loch Lomond has a strong focus on sustainability so we tried to walk as many places as possible. After all, one of the best parts of spending time on Loch Lomond is being immersed in nature. You can walk everywhere as the Western Trail runs along the lake on the east side.
Dog Friendly Travels Along The Nc500!
Another great way to explore Loch Lomond is by electric bike; A charging point for e-bikes will be installed in Drymen Square and there are chargers you can borrow from a number of cafes (including St Mocha’s Cafe in Riverside).
The best way to get to the east side of Loch Lomond is by train from Glasgow to Balloch and then the McGill bus to Balmaha. Public transport will only take you as far as Balmaha, so you will need to walk (about 2.5 hours) or drive to get to Rowardennan Lodge.
We stayed at Rowardennan Lodge youth hostel which is one of Hostelling Scotland’s dog friendly properties. This lodge was once a hunting lodge and is located right on the beautiful shores of Loch Lomond; It has the most amazing view and you can see the lake from many of the rooms and from the hotel.
Our private room had a view of Loch Lomond and it was amazing to wake up to. The bathrooms are shared and the showers are the best I’ve had in a hostel. The wifi is a bit slow, but I hear it will improve soon. Plus, this is where you want to be hanging out, not on your social media feeds!

There is also a large kitchen and plenty of dining space where you can prepare your own meals or enjoy a hot meal in the living room.
You have a choice of continental or cooked breakfast; You can also order a three-course meal for dinner, which we had one night. We had soup and bread for starters, Tikka Masala for main course and chocolate fudge for dessert. It was delicious!
Angus was also able to join us for dinner – we brought our own plate and he happily ate while we enjoyed our meal.

After dinner we went to the lounge where we relaxed with views over Loch Lomond and enjoyed a quiet beer (yes, this pub is licensed and you can buy craft beer).
I have been on many trips around Scotland and have used these accommodations as a base; They are a great choice if you are looking for comfortable accommodation at a reasonable price.
One of the best things about Hostelling Scotland hostels is that they are healthy and family friendly. We met people from all walks of life: young students, retirees hiking the Mountain West, and people in their 30s (like us) using the lodge as a hiking base.
If you wish to bring your dog, you will be charged £5 for each night your dog stays.
Dog Friendly Accommodation In Pitlochry
The Clachan Inn is one of my favorite pubs in Scotland; The pub was licensed in 1734, making it the oldest registered pub in Scotland and one of the oldest pubs in Scotland.
The pub area is dog friendly (and in my opinion the best place to sit and eat). The owners and bar staff are amazing – they were happy to see Angus and gave him lots of goodies and a glass of water.
I ordered the Aberdeen Angus burger which was very tasty and Craig had the steak pie. He swears it’s one of the best pies he’s ever had!
This pub has a local feel and definitely has a special place in my heart. In my opinion, it is a must see.
Seven Dog Friendly Walks In Scotland
Another highlight was Perch when he visited Loch Lomond. Situated on the seafront, The Perch is elegant yet offers comfort food. They specialize in delicious brunches, lunches and homemade pies.
When we arrived, Angus received greetings and patches and was given a cup of water while Haggis and I looked at the menu. I chose the pulled pork sandwich which was delicious! The witches ate caesar salad and also said it was delicious.
This pub/restaurant is more casual and dogs are also welcome. Angus made a lot of friends when we went here for dinner!
You can sit with your dog outside St Mocha’s Cafe and Ice Cream Shop in Balmaha. They produce their own ice cream and coffee and have a strong focus on sustainability by using by-products from roasting their own coffee. They even made Angus Pupachino when we visited!
Dog Friendly Trails To Explore Around Perth
Next to the hotel is the Oak Tree, where you can sit with your dog in the outdoor area. The Oak Tree Inn has twice been named the best pub in Scotland and sources its ingredients as locally as possible. They serve a variety of food including pizza, burgers, fish and chips and shepherd’s pie.
If you like the sound of homemade soup and bread, Dragon Soup Cafe in Drymen is a vegan/vegetarian cafe with a lovely outside seating area where you can sit with your dog. There is also a nice walk through the forest.
If you’re looking for a more challenging route, Ben Lomond is a popular choice. As Scotland’s most southerly Munro (a mountain in Scotland over 3,000 feet), Ben Lomond is popular with tourists from Glasgow and even Edinburgh.
My recommendation is to spend more than one day in the area, especially as the drive to Ben Lomond takes between 4.5 and 5.5 hours on average.

Best of all, if you stay at Rowardennan Lodge Youth Hostel, the road to Ben Lomond starts at the lodge!
If you want a shorter hike with great views, Conic Hill is a popular choice. Conic Hill is very popular with the locals; Most Glaswegians visit and climb this hill at weekends, returning home in time for dinner.
The walk takes you through forest and climbs gently until you reach the kissing gate where the path is steep but manageable. The kissing gate can be a bit difficult for big dogs, but Angus eventually found it and we didn’t have to carry him through the gate!
The view from the first small hill is amazing – you can see Loch Lomond and the islands and of course the power of Munro and Ben Lomond.

Angus loved this short but steep walk and we saw many dogs of all breeds and colors along the way.
Be sure to keep your dog on a lead at all times as there are often livestock around.

Dog Friendly Things To Do In Scotland
The ferry runs from Balmaha and Luss yard from April to October (this is a rough guide – it also depends on the water level when the ferry runs). It operates on demand from 9am to 5.30pm and a return ticket costs £7.50. And yes, your dog is welcome on board!
