Cramming five people into a small car for a few days can easily become a problem. And this is especially true of the Griswold family.

But despite this chaos, Clark Griswold means well. He wanted to use his two week vacation to take his wife (Ellen) and kids (Audrey and Rusty) to Walley World.

Although Ellen and the kids prefer to fly, Clark believes that a road trip is the best way to go. “Getting there is part of the fun,” he said. So the Griswolds packed their things into their new van (which Clark had to buy) and began their journey from Chicago to California.

Maybe not the best word to describe his experience. Edna’s grumpy Aunt Ellen and her unfriendly dog, Dinky, accompany the family for part of the trip. Family many times cheats money. And Clark’s erratic driving leaves the entire family stranded in the Arizona desert.

But, regardless of the problem, Clark’s determination to entertain the family at Wally World never wavered. And the Griswolds walk away with a lifetime of memories – some good, some not so good.

Despite all the chaos Clark puts his family through, his main goal is to spend time with them. “The idea of a family vacation is to spend time together as a family,” she says. Despite the chaos of this humble walk, Clark’s basic intentions are good.

Clark prayed for the woman afterwards. He talks about Hinduism and karma in prayer. Ellen also prayed for the dead woman, including some implicitly aggressive comments about her husband.

In the car, while their children sleep, Clark and Ellen reminisce about a sexual encounter they had in college. Clark and Ellen often have intimate moments during their stops. In one scene, Rusty and Audrey walk past their parents making love on the bedroom floor. Ellen and Clark share a passionate kiss and the girl tells Audrey that she knows how to French kiss. When Audrey replies that everyone knows how to do it, she explains that her dad said she was really good at French kissing.

When Ellen takes a shower, Clarke opens the curtains to reveal her half naked. She asks if she can “do” her performance, and Ellen replies that Clark should “do” in front of her. Ellen wore revealing pajamas that barely covered her sensitive areas. When the Griswolds visit Ellen’s older brother, Uncle Eddie, both their son and daughter wear midriff-baring shirts. Audrey tells her parents that Rusty slept in his underwear and Clark was seen in his underwear while hiking in the Arizona desert.

Clark repeatedly flirts with a young woman while his wife sleeps in the car, a behavior that is treated as a joke in the movie. In one instance, the woman danced for him with cues. Later, Clark meets her in the hotel bar and tells her that Ellen is not his wife. They went to the hotel pool where the woman undressed in front of him and got naked with him. (We see both in their underwear, but the last clothes are removed from the camera.) Although the details of their bodies cannot be discerned underwater, Clark and the other women are both naked, and some of their skin can be seen.

Ellen, Audrey and Rusty (along with the entire motel) see Clark and the skinny woman. Clarke tried to explain her betrayal matter-of-factly, saying, “When you get old, you get these feelings.” And when Clark apologizes to his wife about the situation, she apologizes for being “bored” and immediately forgives him. Then he took Clark to the pool to lose weight. There he took off his clothes and appeared naked. Clark was also seen shirtless.

Eddie and Rusty’s sons were looking at a porn magazine and saw a woman in underwear on the cover. The boys then talk about “using” porn magazines and refer to masturbation.

After Clark drives off, Audrey says she thinks she’s on her period. And after an argument with Ellen, Clark goes to a bar and flirts with some women.

Clark’s distracted driving caused problems. While driving at night, Clarke falls asleep at the wheel and almost hits pedestrians and avoids an accident. In another scene, Clark crashes in the desert and Rusty’s nose starts bleeding. As Clark walks through the desert to find help, he sees a human skeleton.

In the countryside, the Griswolds hear gunshots. In another small town, a bartender fires a gun after Clark mentions him. Clark bought a gun and threatened a guard. Later he shot this man in the back. He forced the other man to sit and lie down while holding the gun. Police officers pointed guns at several people.

Although not shown, we know that the character tied the dog to the bumper of his car and forgot to remove the animal before driving out. One character mentions cleaning the carcass. Another character refers to the villain as a “killer dog”.

Aunt Edna hits Clark when she tries to help him into the car. Annoyed by Aunt Edna’s complaints, Ellen threatens to punch her if she gets out of the car. The officer told Clark that if he wasn’t in uniform, he would break Clark’s skull. The other cops go after Ellen and she rips her arm off. Clark punches the deer statue. Dinky Aunt Edna’s dog bites Clark and Rusty’s ankles.

A character dies in his sleep and his friends tie his body to the top of their car. When they couldn’t find anyone to take him, his friends left his body on someone else’s doorstep.

The character uses abusive language, including eight uses of the f-word, six uses of the s-word, two misuses of Jesus’ name, and eight misuses of God’s name (including “d-” four times). There are also four uses of “a-” (including one written on a postcard), two uses of “a-hole”, four uses of “d-n”, seven uses of “h-“, two uses of “devil”. and disposable “b–ch” and “bullshit”.

Some characters drink alcohol and go to bars. Clark takes his family to a western-style bar and orders them all (including the kids) beers. And when they are stuck in the desert, Clark shares a beer with Rusty, who easily downs all the drinks. Clark orders Rusty not to let his mother smell the beer on his breath.

Clark refused to admit his mistake to Ellen. After finding herself forced to buy a car she doesn’t want, she pretends that Griswold’s new car is the perfect vehicle for a road trip.

Rasti and Audrey may not respect their parents. In one scene, Rusty continues to play video games after Clark tells him to stop, and he puts his foot on the back of Clark’s car. While Clark and Ellen sing a road trip song, Rusty and Audrey pretend to be choking.

Another recurring joke is that Clark doesn’t remember his daughter’s name, and Clark says he likes to see a bunch of flowers from Eddie’s sister-in-law Ellen. Clark and Ellen bicker and sometimes yell during their fights. In a fit of anger, Clark insulted Ellen and stormed out of their hotel room.

The movie shows the robbery as a joke. For example, a group of men steal hats from Clark’s car when someone gives them directions, and they also spray paint the words “corner lips” on the car. Desperate, Clarke stole money from the hotel and ran away.

A man tells Clark to watch out for Indians on his journey. The other man thought that the person who attacked his property was an Arab.

Birthdays don’t get old. While modern entertainment obviously still contains all kinds of malicious content, I suspect most viewers today would agree that Clark’s treatment of his wife (and all women for that matter) was completely unacceptable. The film portrays the man’s adultery and clearly states that his wife’s jealousy led him to commit this immoral act.

This paints a very dysfunctional picture of what this intimate relationship should look like. While Clark appears to be a decent father who has taken his wife and kids on a nice vacation, his immaturity, rudeness, and selfishness undermine this attitude.
