City breaks aren’t usually my cup of tea (I’m talking short breaks!) but both my kids love city trips. Although this has caused some conflict in vacation planning over the years, I appreciate the cultural sites, amazing restaurants, and beautiful architecture that the big cities on the East Coast have to offer.

Since we live in Vermont, we are within a day’s drive of many major cities. This is a small town and we love it for a family vacation (but not too crowded) on the East Coast.
I knew I would be disappointed because I didn’t include two of my favorite cities, New York and Boston. As much as I love them, I think the cities on this list are the best choices for kids.
When it comes to finding and appealing to kids, it’s hard to hold a candle to Washington, DC, home to the world’s largest museum (completely free to visitors), DC is the city which can be accompanied by enough cultural displays to keep a family busy for a week or more.
Many of Washington’s monuments are clustered in park-like spaces on or near the Washington Mall. Families can climb to the top of the Washington Monument, pay their respects at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and learn about famous American presidents and many monuments.

What do kids like about Washington? He does research at the International Spy Museum, sees a play about the assassination at Lincoln Ford’s Theater, and visits the pandas at the Smithsonian National Zoo.
Where to stay: Save yourself a headache by staying near the National Mall. I promise it’s worth the extra effort. With clean facilities and rooms, the State Plaza Hotel is close to all the attractions and is very affordable.
How to get around: If you don’t want to hit the road, most of this tour can be done on foot. The DC Metro system is a cheap option for visiting the zoo or traveling outside the city.

Philadelphia is another capital city in the East that shows that a family vacation in the city can be expensive. With tons of free attractions and events, great family-friendly museums, and some of the best restaurants we’ve tried anywhere, Philadelphia should be on every family’s bucket list. .
History buffs will want to visit the Liberty Bell (free, but expect a long line), visit Independence Hall, where the law and the Declaration of Independence were signed, and walk around Old Town, the streets of which are covered with stones in the 18th century. mercy
What do kids like about Philadelphia? Younger children enjoy exploring the exhibits at the Please Touch Museum and Memorial Hall of History, and older children enjoy the science exhibits at the Franklin Institute, one of the East’s most popular science museums.
Where to stay: Philadelphia has many small neighborhoods, each with its own character and atmosphere. We haven’t tried them all, but we love Fishtown for the walking distance and great restaurants. This beautiful affordable home has five bedrooms and three bathrooms. It even has an outdoor patio with a barbecue.

How to get around: Philadelphia is considered one of the most beautiful cities in the country, and the diverse neighborhoods and major areas make walking a pleasure. You can also buy a day for SEPTA, the commuter rail/train, and get within a few miles of most of the city’s attractions.
Recommended tour: For kids 12 and up, this Segway tour is a fun way to explore some of Philadelphia’s popular attractions. It is a small group tour that lasts about two hours.
Atlanta is one of the best family vacations on the East Coast for kid-friendly attractions that will appeal to children ages 12 and up. The city has the largest aquarium in the world, the College Sports Hall of Fame and the famous Coca-Cola Company. And there are many more!
Atlanta is a city of your choice, and if you enjoy the outdoors, there are many parks with playgrounds and trails. The Atlanta Botanical Garden is located in Piedmont Park and has 30 acres of beautiful year-round exhibits.

How to get around: MARTA provides good coverage of downtown and downtown, but we’ve found that using a car, whether it’s your own or an Uber, works best.

Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains (next to Blue Ridge Park!), Roanoke is a city that embraces nature wholeheartedly. There are 55 parks in the city, as well as eight parks, five public beaches, two public pools and two dog parks.
Families can visit the daily outdoor farmers market, tour the Roanoke Star on Mill Mountain, and visit Roanoke’s exciting Taubman Museum of Art, which offers free general admission every day. weekdays including 11 galleries of contemporary American art.

East Coast Family Vacation Ideas
Burlington, Vermont is a special place! It’s a great city for families – not too big, with a walkable downtown and great views of Lake Champlain.
Burlington is home to the University of Vermont, the famous Church Street Market and about 42,000 residents. It’s a mecca for beer and coffee lovers, foodies and shoppers, and has been voted the best city in the United States multiple times.
Located on the shores of Lake Champlain, one of the best ways to explore this beautiful city is from the water, or at least near it.
The Burlington Greenway runs along the waterfront for eight miles, connecting several parks and recreation areas, including Burlington Waterfront, North Beach and Leddy Park. Buy a bike from Motion Zone and spend the day cruising around the lake, stopping for a swim when it’s too hot.
