Dog-friendly Vacations In Southern California

We were on a quest to find the best dog beaches in Southern California, and surprisingly, our options were very limited. There are many outdoor beaches, but we have puppies who enjoy running freely in and out of the water, so outdoor beaches are a must.

Best Dog Friendly Beaches In Southern California [now With Map]

Over the past few months, we’ve scoured Southern California’s dog-friendly beaches and ranked them from our favorite to our least favorite.

Huntington Dog Beach was definitely our favorite dog beach in Southern California, and we would come here every weekend if we lived nearby. The dog beach area is clearly marked and we had no trouble finding a parking spot since we arrived just before noon.

Its height, cleanliness and deep water created the best environment for our children. It was Zooey’s first time in the water alone, and she really enjoyed running in and out of the water.

A wonderful non-profit group runs this beach and does a great job of keeping it “beautiful” so our kids can run and play freely.

We were staying at the Hilton Beachfront Hotel in Santa Barbara and a friend suggested we visit Hendry’s Beach. Crystal loved the beauty here.

The big rocks were nice and there was enough space for everyone on the beach. The off-leash area starts in the east and there are clear signs to guide you in the right direction.

Here we saw a restaurant overlooking the beautiful beach of Arroyo Burro; dogs are not allowed. Don’t worry, there are plenty of other dog-friendly options in Santa Barbara.

Ocean Avenue and Scenic Road, Carmel, CA 93922 Parking: Yes, but limited Street Parking: Yes, but limited Bathrooms: Yes.

Best Rv Trips With Dogs

This was the first beach we visited and the farthest from LAX. For some reason, this dog beach is always listed as a Southern California location; however, Carmel is actually part of Northern California and is closer to San Francisco than Los Angeles.

We decided to add it to our list because Carmel-by-the-Sea is dog heaven and is rated no. 1 Dog Friendly City in America.

We were staying at a hotel that was close to dogs so we decided to go to Carmel Beach since parking is very limited. The place is beautiful and the soft white sand felt under our feet.

Kumi especially liked the sand here and was very happy when his little paws touched the sand. We think the white sand reminded him of Florida.

Great Dog Friendly Beaches In California

This was the busiest beach we visited. We arrived in the morning around 9am and were shocked to see the car park lined up outside the car park.

Luckily we got a chance and the key was to be patient as someone always seemed to get back to their car.

There are many beach goers here from surfers, volleyball players and dog owners so it was packed despite the large parking lot.

Dog-friendly Vacations In Southern California

We loved how big the dog area was and the water was shallow enough for our kids to go in and enjoy the waves. There are also a bunch of big rocks here, so if your kid likes to jump on rocks, this is a great place.

L.a.’s 8 Best Dog Friendly Summer Hikes

Zooey LOVES to jump and rock climb so she has fun here. Kuma also enjoyed climbing rocks, trying to knock over Zooey and chase other dogs away.

We spent the weekend in Long Beach and Rosie’s Dog Beach was just a few miles from the lovely pet friendly hotel we were staying at.

When we started looking for an unspoiled beach in the Los Angeles area, Rosie’s Dog Beach was always in the search results. It is also currently the only dog-friendly beach in LA County.

When we visited on a Saturday morning around 9:30, there was plenty of parking and plenty of room for our kids to run around. For some reason, the puppies didn’t seem to like this beach very much.

The Best Pet Friendly Hotels In Los Angeles

There was nothing wrong with him and he was clean, but he looked dirty. Even the sand at the water’s edge looked like mud, and the dog’s paws and feet looked very muddy every time he stepped in and out of the water.

Again, it wasn’t a bad beach for the dogs, but it didn’t give us or the dogs the same fun as other beaches.

This was our favorite for several reasons. First, there was no parking in the area, so your only option was to find street parking in nearby areas.

It was a long walk to get to the dog beach and when you finally get there it is very small.

Beyond that, behind you is a tall fence protecting the US Naval Base. It seemed like a lot of effort from parking to the long drive to the beach to end up with a familiar view and limited space.

That being said, many of our friends loved this beach and highly recommended it. If you live near the area or visit on an off-peak day, it might be the best experience.

We hope our review will help you plan a beach trip with your dog.

So, if you’re planning a day trip with the dog in Southern California from June to September, make sure you stick to the coastal towns rather than the inland areas.

November and March are the best times to visit inland destinations such as Palm Springs, Ojai or Joshua Tree, which are popular winter getaways in California. However, winter is the rainy season in California, so prepare for rain and be flexible with your plans.
