When we moved from London to Maui, we had a big problem to solve: how to transport our beloved dog Hattie. We knew they could be brought to Hawaii, but we had heard horror stories about dogs being quarantined for six months after arriving in Hawaii.

Yes, you can bring your dog to Hawaii, but you must apply for a Direct Airport Exemption (DAR) to avoid the six-month quarantine. You should start this process one month before your arrival in Hawaii. We explain how we went through the process and what we learned.

A New Airline For Dogs Takes Flight
To do this, your dog must have at least two lifetime vaccinations, and the most recent rabies vaccination must be active (not expired) before entering Hawaii.
Hattie had never had a rabies shot in her life (England is rabies free) so we had to get two shots. The vaccination had to be done every 30 days and after the second vaccination we had to wait 30 days for the blood test.
Planning and plenty of time to make sure all of these things are done before you decide to take your dog to Hawaii is key!
Now that you’ve given your dog two rabies shots and given him time to develop rabies antibodies, it’s time to run a blood test at one of three approved labs.

This was the most complicated part of the process for us from the UK. If you live in the US it should be much easier. Give your vet the names of the labs and they should be able to arrange for samples to be sent to them.
Your dog’s blood samples will be sent to a lab, and the lab will send the results directly to the Hawaii Department of Agriculture (no permit or fail). You should also get a copy of the results from your vet
To check the status of the test and make sure the results have been received by the Hawaii Department of Agriculture, you can search for animal quarantine microchips.
